The short answer

In a WhatsApp chat, put single asterisks around the text: *like this*. That formatting does not work in your About, group names or Status — for those, paste Unicode bold characters from the generator above.

Where this works on WhatsApp

Chat messages

Use *single asterisks* — real bold on every platform.

About

139 characters, no formatting. Unicode only.

Group & Community names

No formatting. Unicode only.

Status

700 characters of text status; no formatting.

Business profile

Works, but keep it plain so customers can find you.

WhatsApp's asterisk formatting, in full

WhatsApp uses single characters rather than doubles: one asterisk each side for bold, one underscore for italic, one tilde for strikethrough, and triple backticks for monospace. You can combine them, and long-pressing selected text on mobile brings up a formatting menu that inserts them for you.

This is real formatting and it should be your default inside chats — it renders on iOS, Android, Web and Desktop, and it stays searchable in WhatsApp's own message search.

The fields WhatsApp will not format

Your About line, group names, Community names and text Status all store literal characters. Type asterisks there and you get asterisks. Unicode bold is the only way to make those look bold, which is why it is so common on group names.

One caveat worth knowing: older Android builds have patchier coverage of the mathematical bold block than iOS, so a bold group name that looks right on your phone may show as boxes for some members. The sans-serif bold style has the best coverage.

Frequently asked questions

How do you bold text in WhatsApp?

Put a single asterisk on each side of the text: *like this*. On mobile you can also select the text and choose Bold from the pop-up menu.

Why won't asterisks bold my WhatsApp About text?

Formatting only works inside chat messages. The About field renders literal characters, so it needs Unicode bold instead.

How do I bold a WhatsApp group name?

Group names do not support formatting. Copy Unicode bold from the generator above and paste it in when editing the group subject.

Does bold formatting work on WhatsApp Web?

Yes, the asterisk syntax works identically on Web and Desktop.

Styling text is the easy part

Autoadify writes the posts, generates the images and video, and schedules everything across Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, YouTube, Pinterest and Reddit — from one calendar.
