The fast answer: how to bold text in Discord
Inside a message, put two asterisks on each side of the text. Typing **read the rules** and hitting enter sends read the rules in bold. Italic is one asterisk, bold italic is three, underline is two underscores, and strikethrough is two tildes. On desktop, Ctrl+B (Cmd+B on Mac) applies the asterisks for you on selected text.
This is genuine formatting. It stays searchable, it copies as normal text, and screen readers handle it correctly. Wherever it is available, it is the right answer.
Where markdown stops working
Discord only parses markdown in message bodies. Everywhere else — your username, your display name, the server name, channel and category names, role names, your custom status, your About Me — renders exactly the characters you type. Put double asterisks in a channel name and you get a channel with visible asterisks in it.
Unicode bold solves that. The generator above produces characters that are already bold-shaped, so they look bold in any field, on any client, without Discord needing to format anything.

The trade-offs nobody mentions
Unicode bold is not text as far as anything that reads text is concerned. Discord's own search will not find a Unicode-bold word when you search the plain word. Bots that match commands or keywords against message content will not see it. Server automod keyword filters will not catch it — which is exactly why filter evasion is a rule violation on most servers even though the characters themselves are harmless.
Screen readers announce each character individually, so a Unicode-bold sentence is read as a string of disconnected letters. In a message, markdown avoids all of this. Save Unicode for the fields that give you no alternative.
