Facebook posts versus Messenger
These are two different products with two different answers. Messenger parses lightweight formatting: asterisks give bold, underscores give italic, tildes give strikethrough. In a Messenger chat, use that.
The main Facebook composer parses nothing. Posts, comments, bios, Page names and Group descriptions all render literal characters, so Unicode bold is the only way to emphasise a word.
Bold a headline, not a paragraph
Facebook truncates posts at around 480 characters with a “See more” link. A single bold opening line in that visible window does real work — it gives the post a headline in a feed that has none.
A fully bold post has the opposite effect. It reads as shouting, it is unsearchable, and screen readers announce it letter by letter. One line is the useful dose.
