Add a decoration
wraps your text — costs extra charactersThe short answer
LinkedIn has no bold button anywhere — not in posts, not in your profile. Bold LinkedIn text is Unicode characters pasted in. Generate a style above and paste it into a post, your headline or your About section.
Where this works on LinkedIn
3,000 characters, with only ~140 shown before “see more”.
220 characters, and heavily weighted in LinkedIn search.
2,600 characters — the most common place for styled subheadings.
1,250 characters.
Styled bullets and headers render fine.
The most-used and most-abused Unicode on any platform
LinkedIn is where Unicode bold has become a genuine convention. Because there is no formatting toolbar and posts run long, creators use bold Unicode for section headers and standalone lines to make a 3,000-character post scannable. It works, and the audience is used to it.
It is also visibly overused. A post where every second line is bold reads as engagement bait rather than expertise, and LinkedIn's audience has become sensitive to the pattern. One or two bold lines in a long post is the level that still helps.
Your headline is a search field — leave it plain
LinkedIn recruiter search and the site's own people search both match your headline text. Styling it removes you from those results for the exact terms you want to be found for, which is a costly trade for a decorative gain.
There is an accessibility dimension too, and it matters more on LinkedIn than elsewhere: styled Unicode is read out character by character by screen readers, so a bold headline is announced as a stream of individual letters. On a professional network, that is a bad look as well as a barrier.
Frequently asked questions
How do I bold text in a LinkedIn post?
LinkedIn has no bold button. Generate bold Unicode above, copy it, and paste it into the post composer.
Does bold text hurt LinkedIn reach?
LinkedIn does not penalise it directly, but styled words are not matched by search and screen readers read them letter by letter. Use it for a header line, not the whole post.
Should I style my LinkedIn headline?
Generally no. The headline is a primary field for recruiter and people search, and styled characters will not match plain-text queries.
Does this work in LinkedIn articles and newsletters?
Articles have a real rich-text editor with proper bold and headings — use that instead. Unicode is for posts, comments and profile fields.
