Reddit's markdown is the better tool
Reddit has one of the most complete markdown implementations of any social platform: bold, italic, headers, quotes, code blocks, tables, spoilers and links all work in comments and post bodies. Double asterisks give you real bold, and the new editor has a formatting toolbar if you prefer buttons.

Titles and flair are the exception — and a rule risk
Post titles strip markdown entirely, so the only way to emphasise a word in a title is Unicode. Before you do it, read the subreddit rules: a large share of major subreddits explicitly forbid non-standard characters in titles, and Automoderator removes offending posts automatically, often within seconds.
Flair is the safer spot. It is short, it is decorative by design, and subreddits that allow custom flair rarely restrict the character set.
