How to calculate and interpret follower growth rate
Follower growth rate is calculated as ((end followers − start followers) ÷ start followers) × 100. It's more meaningful than raw follower count because it shows momentum — a 500-follower account growing 10% monthly will overtake a 10,000-follower account growing 0.5% monthly within a couple of years.
Track growth rate monthly rather than daily to smooth out the noise from individual viral posts. A single video that spikes your followers one week doesn't reflect sustainable growth — monthly rates reveal the underlying trend.
Growth rate vs engagement rate
Growth rate and engagement rate often move in opposite directions. Smaller, faster-growing accounts typically have higher engagement rates — their audience is newer and more active. As accounts scale past 100K, both metrics naturally slow. Use both together to get a complete picture of account health.
