Quick Answer: How Do You Get Your Videos Into Ask YouTube?

Ask YouTube is YouTube's conversational AI search: viewers type a question, and it answers with a mix of long videos, Shorts, clips and text, then takes follow-up questions. YouTube's own advice for appearing in it is to publish unique, high-quality videos with clear chapters and descriptive titles. In practice that means answering one question per video, saying the question and answer plainly in the title and description, and splitting longer videos into chapters a system can match to a question. YouTube says views from Ask YouTube answers count toward view totals and Partner Program eligibility.

What Ask YouTube is

Ask YouTube is a separate search mode, not a replacement for YouTube search. On mobile, a viewer taps the search icon, then Ask, and types a question in plain language: "how do I fix a wobbly dining table," "best beginner film camera under $500." The answer draws on YouTube videos and on information from the web, and mixes long videos, Shorts and text, with clips showing the video title and channel. The viewer can then refine the question or ask a follow-up in the same session.

It is the YouTube equivalent of Google's AI Mode or ChatGPT search: the viewer gets an answer first, and the videos are the evidence for it. For a creator, being one of those videos is the new version of ranking.

What YouTube says helps

YouTube has published very little about how Ask YouTube picks videos. What it has said, in its July announcement:

  • Creators can improve their chances by "publishing unique, high-quality content and adding clear video chapters and descriptive titles."
  • Views count. Views from Shorts, videos and previews shown in Ask YouTube answers count toward a video's total views and toward Partner Program eligibility.

That guidance is short, but it points somewhere specific. Chapters and titles are how a system matches part of a video to one question. A 20-minute video with no chapters is one long block; the same video with eight descriptive chapters is eight possible answers.

The Ask YouTube checklist

  1. Answer one question per video. Pick the question a viewer would actually type, and make the video the best answer to it. A video that covers five things loosely is a weak answer to all five.
  2. Put the question or the answer in the title. "How to fix a wobbly table without tools" is a descriptive title. "You won't believe this trick" is not. Descriptive titles are one of the two things YouTube named.
  3. Add chapters to every long video. List timestamps in the description: the first must be 0:00, there must be at least three in ascending order, and each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long. Name each chapter after what it answers ("Tightening the leg bolts"), not "Part 2."
  4. Say the answer early, out loud and on screen. Answer in the first seconds, then explain. A clip lifted into an answer has to make sense on its own.
  5. Use the description for the written answer. Two or three sentences that restate the question and answer at the top of the description, before links and credits.
  6. Give each Short one idea and a real title. Shorts have no chapters, so the title and the first line of the description carry everything. One Short, one answer.
  7. For products, name them exactly. YouTube is turning Ask YouTube into a product recommendation guide. Say and write the full product name, model and the job it does ("Linen duvet cover, king, for hot sleepers"), and use product tags where you can.

None of this is a trick. It is the same work that makes a video useful to a person searching, done carefully enough that a machine can tell what each part of the video is about.

The work overlaps: a video with a clear title and chapters is easier for all three to use. For the wider picture, see zero-click search and AI Mode and GEO for social media.

Who can use Ask YouTube?

Signed-in viewers in the US aged 13 and over, on desktop, mobile and TV, searching in English. It is not available to signed-out viewers, supervised accounts or YouTube Kids.

Do views from Ask YouTube count toward monetisation?

Yes. YouTube says views from Shorts, videos and previews in Ask YouTube answers count toward total views and Partner Program eligibility.

YouTube recommends unique, high-quality videos with clear chapters and descriptive titles. Answer one question per video, name it in the title, add chapters to long videos, and state the answer early.

The Bottom Line

Ask YouTube puts an AI answer between the viewer and the search results, and the videos it uses are the new top results. YouTube has told creators what helps: unique videos, clear chapters, descriptive titles. Answer one question per video, name it plainly, chapter everything long, and give every Short a title that says what it answers.
