# How to Schedule Threads Posts in 2026: Limits, Tokens and What Breaks

> Threads posts can be scheduled through its official API: up to 500 characters, 20 images or a 5-minute video, and 250 posts a day. Here is how to set it up, how publishing actually works behind the scenes, and the 60-day token rule that silently disconnects accounts.

## Quick Answer: Can You Schedule Posts on Threads?

**Yes. Connect your Threads account to a scheduling tool that uses Meta's official Threads API, write a post of up to 500 characters with up to 20 images or one video of up to 5 minutes, and pick a time. Each account can publish up to 250 posts in 24 hours. The thing to check in any tool is how it handles the access token: Threads tokens last 60 days and must be refreshed before they expire, because an expired one cannot be recovered — the account has to be reconnected.**

- **500** — Characters per post
- **20** — Images in one carousel post
- **250** — Posts per account in 24 hours
- **60** — Days a Threads token lasts unless refreshed

## How to schedule Threads posts, step by step

1. **Connect your Threads account.** In your scheduling tool, add Threads. You are sent to Threads to sign in and approve access, then returned to the tool.
2. **Write the post.** Keep it within 500 characters. Text-only posts are fine on Threads, unlike Instagram.
3. **Add media if you want it.** Up to 20 images as a carousel, or one video of up to 5 minutes. Images should be JPEG or PNG.
4. **Choose a time and schedule.** The post is published at that time through the Threads API.
5. **Check the first post.** Open it on Threads and confirm the text, images and order are as you scheduled them.

## Threads limits at a glance

| Limit | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Text | 500 characters |
| Images | Up to 20 per post (2 or more become a carousel) |
| Image files | JPEG or PNG, up to 8 MB, 320 to 1440 pixels wide |
| Video | One per post, up to 5 minutes, MP4 or MOV |
| Best image ratio | 1:1 (1080 × 1080); 4:5 and 16:9 also work |
| Posting volume | 250 posts per account per 24 hours |
| Text-only posts | Allowed |

For the same numbers across every other network, see [social media character limits and image sizes for every platform](/blog/social-media-character-limits-image-sizes-2026).

## How Threads publishing actually works

Threads does not accept a post in one request. Publishing is a two-step process, the same pattern Instagram uses:

- **Create a container.** The tool sends the text and the media _links_. Threads does not take file uploads; Meta's servers download each image and video from a public URL.
- **Wait for processing.** The container reports a status. Images are usually ready at once; video takes longer. For a carousel, every image and video is its own container, and all of them must finish before the carousel can be assembled.
- **Publish.** Only once the container reports it is finished does a publish call make the post live.

Two consequences matter if a scheduled Threads post fails. First, media must be at a **public** address when Meta fetches it: a link that needs a login, or that has expired, fails at processing rather than at upload. Second, a tool that publishes before processing finishes gets an error even though nothing is wrong with your post. A good tool waits for the status, which is why a Threads video can take a little longer to appear than its scheduled minute.

## The 60-day token rule

When you connect Threads, the tool receives an access token that lasts 60 days. It can be renewed once it is at least a day old, and each renewal gives another 60 days. Unlike most networks, there is no separate refresh token to fall back on: **if the 60 days run out, the token is dead**, and the only fix is to reconnect the account in a browser.

A tool that renews tokens only when it publishes will lose accounts that post rarely. Look for one that renews tokens on a schedule, whether or not you post. Autoadify checks every connected account's token daily and renews it well before it expires, so a Threads account you only post to once a month stays connected.

## What you can measure

The Threads API reports views, likes, replies, reposts, quotes and shares for each post, plus your follower count. Threads does not separate impressions from reach the way Instagram does — "views" is the closest equivalent to both.

## Building your own Threads integration? Three setup traps

If you are connecting to the Threads API yourself rather than using a tool, these cost us the most time:

- **Threads is its own app.** It has a separate App ID and secret, its own login (on threads.net) and its own API host (graph.threads.net). The credentials for your Facebook or Instagram integration do not work.
- **The redirect URL goes in the Threads use case.** In Meta's developer dashboard, add your callback URL under the Threads API use case, not under Facebook Login. If you put it in the wrong place, Meta shows a "URL blocked" error (`error_code 1349168`) worded as if Facebook Login were the problem.
- **Ask only for the permissions you use.** Publishing needs `threads_basic` and `threads_content_publish`; stats need `threads_manage_insights`. Requesting permissions with no visible feature behind them is a common reason Meta's App Review rejects a submission, and other people's accounts cannot post through your app until it is approved.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can you schedule posts on Threads?

Yes, through a scheduling tool that uses Meta's official Threads API. Connect your account, write the post, and choose a time.

### What is the Threads character limit?

500 characters per post.

### How many images can a Threads post have?

Up to 20. Two or more images are published as a carousel.

### How long can a Threads video be?

Up to 5 minutes, one video per post.

### How many posts can I publish on Threads per day?

The API allows 250 posts per account in any 24-hour period.

### Why did my Threads account disconnect from my scheduling tool?

Most likely the 60-day access token expired without being renewed. Expired Threads tokens cannot be refreshed, so you need to reconnect the account.

### Can I cross-post from Instagram to Threads automatically?

You can publish the same post to both from one tool, but they behave differently: Instagram requires an image or video, while Threads accepts text alone and allows 500 characters against Instagram's 2,200. A short, separate version for Threads usually performs better than a copied Instagram caption.

## The Bottom Line

Scheduling Threads is straightforward through the official API. Keep posts within 500 characters, host media at a public address, and choose a tool that renews tokens on its own schedule — the 60-day expiry is the one Threads problem you cannot fix after the fact.

## Schedule Threads with everything else

Autoadify publishes to Threads through the official API alongside Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, Bluesky and the rest, waits for media processing before publishing, and renews tokens before they expire so accounts stay connected.
